The following information is intended to support understanding and best practices of coiled tubing injector skate chain lubrication systems and operations.
The CSI Skate System is lubricated with a splash lubrication system. The products recommended for use are a “once through” application.
By design the recommended products:
Have tacky/stringy properties that minimize wear.
Completely cover all drive, chain, wear plates and linkage points.
Prevent metal-to-metal contact.
Reduce chain dripping and throw-off.
Minimize clean up and waste, reducing consumption.
Provide strong water resistance, long-term rust and corrosion protection.
OPERATIONS:
To lubricate the Injector
System and environmental variations can affect and create different results.
Select “Injector” on the Lubrication Selector Switch.
Activate Injector Lubrication button, hold and begin counting/timing.
Simultaneously, have a person visually witness when lubrication at the injector begins and count/time to 10 seconds of active continuous lubrication of the injector or one complete chain rotation, whichever is shortest.
The total time it takes from operating the lubrication button until there has been 10 seconds of lubrication at the injector, or one complete chain rotation, is the time required for one effective lubrication cycle.
This is the recommended method to ensure consistent lubrication results.
Using other lubrication methods may void warranty.
To lubricate the Stripper
System and environmental variations can affect and create different results.
Select “Stripper” on the Lubrication Selector Switch.
Activate Stripper Lubrication button, hold and begin counting/timing.
Simultaneously, have a person visually witness when lubrication at the injector begins and count/time to 10 seconds of active continuous lubrication of the stripper.
The total time it takes from operating the lubrication button until there has been 10 seconds of lubrication at the stripper is the time required for one effective lubrication cycle.
This is the recommended method to ensure consistent lubrication results.
Using other lubrication methods may void warranty.
Apply lubrication to the Skate Chain:
At the beginning of each day of well-site operation.
After each chain cleaning.
Every 200 operational running meters at a minimum.
Apply lubrication to the Stripper Chain:
At the beginning of each day of well-site operation
Every 200 operational running meters at a minimum when operational.
CAUTIONS:
The lubrication interval is a recommended minimum.
The time required to lubricate a complete chain rotation will vary.
It is the operator’s responsibility to determine what factors affect the adequate lubrication of the injector and stripper.
Excess lubrication is superior to a lack of lubrication.
Lack of lubrication will cause premature wear of the lubricated components.
Air operated lubrication pumps require a constant minimum of 120 psi air pressure.
Using lubricants other than recommended by CSI may void warranty.
LUBRICANTS:
A lubricant’s viscosity properties are closely related to its capability to decrease contact friction between solid surfaces.
Lubricants with too little viscosity will allow the solid surfaces to make contact and generate friction, heat and damage.
A lubricant with too much viscosity requires a greater amount of energy and time to move it through the system and between the solid surfaces. Also, more energy is required to overcome that high viscosity between components.
Typically, the lowest viscosity that still maintains a “fluid bearing” state is optimal.
The viscosity index is an arbitrary measure of lubricating oils viscosity-temperature behavior.
The greater the lubrication viscosity is affected by changes in temperature, the lower the Viscosity Index.
The more stable the viscosity remains over range of temperatures, the higher the Viscosity Index.
